Making the Ngapipi Road and Ngaiwi Street intersection safer

Safety improvements and road works are planned for the intersection of Ngapipi Road and Ngaiwi Street in Ōrākei, Auckland, starting in October 2026. The project is designed to address a high-risk area that has seen 6 crashes between 2020 and 2024, including one serious injury.

Timing of Works
Consultation & Feedback: In progress (February 2026 – Monday, 2 March 2026).
Design & Planning: Mid-2026.
Construction Start: October 2026.
Completion: Expected early 2027.
Key Changes and Impact
The project will change the layout of the intersection to slow traffic and improve safety. Key changes include:
New Roundabout: Installed at the intersection of Ngapipi Road and Ngaiwi Street to slow vehicle speeds.
Pedestrian Crossing: A new crossing will be added on Ngapipi Road.
Road Marking/Infrastructure: Installation of traffic islands and clearer road markings.
Parking Changes: Two on-street parking spaces on Ngaiwi Street will be removed.
Cycle Lane Removal: The interim cycle lane will be removed once the nearby Ōrākei boardwalk is completed.
Related Work
Hobson Bay Boardwalk: Construction of the 870m boardwalk (connecting Orakei Road to Onepu Whakatakataka Reserve/Ngapipi Road) is currently in progress and expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Site Compound: The Orakei Station Park n Ride compound is in use for the nearby path construction, which may limit available parking.
